Warlords of Draenor – A Brief Overview/FAQ

The following guide aims to answer questions frequently asked in guild chat, and to give you a rough idea of the changes, new mechanics and features introduced in the expansion.

  •  Character Progression:-
  1. It is a good idea to level to 100 by completing quests, since quest rewards often come with gear specifically tailored to your class.
  2. Finding hidden treasures can be very helpful as they often contain higher quality items then what is provided from quest rewards.
  3. Once you get to level 100, Normal Dungeons and drops from level 100 rare monsters will provide appropriate loot to be able to enter Heroic Dungeons. Heroic Dungeons have an ilvl requirement of 610 and require you to complete a silver medal proving grounds challenge for the specialisation you wish to queue with.-
  4. Heroic Dungeons drop ilvl 630 gear, which will be enough to get you into the Highmaul raid (which has an ilvl 615 requirement for LFR), and can get you most of the way to the Blackrock Foundry raid (ilvl 635).
  5.  Purchasing high level gear from Apexis Crystals is another route to raiding, however its high cost makes it more time consuming to acquire then completing Heroic Dungeons.
  •  Professions:-

Draenor professions do not have level requirements, making them easier to level from scratch.

The profession trainer is replaced with an item which raises your cap.

It is commonly dropped as loot or can be brought from a vendor in Ashran.

– Cooking is levelled from gathering fish and meat dropped by neutral animals.

  1. You do not buy recipes, but discover them over the course of levelling the profession. Eventually you will learn to cook feasts which buff your character attributes.

– Fishing has a number of different changes.

  1.  There is a generic species of fish which can be caught anywhere, along with a unique fish for each zone.
  2.  In order to get the unique fish, you must either fish from a school of fish or use bait (which has a small chance to drop while fishing).
  3. Fish are caught in three sizes, the size of the fish caught is dependant on your fishing level.
  4.  Fish must be prepared before it is used in cooking/first aid and can only be done in batches.
  5. If you are doing the fishing daily, you will also get eggs in addition to the processed fish.

– First Aid uses cooking materials (fish), along with sumptuous furs (cloth) to level.

Garrison Buildings:

  1. – There are three size of buildings: Small, Medium and Large (as well as a mine, herb patch, fishing hut and menagerie).
  2.  The number of individual plots available will increase as you upgrade the great hall.-
  3. To upgrade a building, you need to purchase the associated plan.
  4.  You can get a couple of free building plans by completing the main quest lines and turning in the associated reward tokens to a vendor in Ashran.  Otherwise you can purchase the plans with gold from a vendor located in your great hall.
  5.  All of the level three plans are locked behind achievements.-
  6. Many buildings have the ability to carry out work orders.
  7. These orders typically require one resource, and after four hours will reward you with a more valuable resource.
  8.  These orders can be queued, so that you can ‘set and forget’ them.
  • – Small buildings mostly exist to complement primary professions, so it is recommended that you choose buildings for the professions which you have trained.
  1. They also allow you to craft a limited set of items in professions you do not have trained.-
  2. The Storehouse provides banking facilities, however with a level three great hall, a portal to Ashran is located in the Tower of War outside the eastern entrance (proving quick travel to a bank).-
  3. It is highly suggested you build a salvage yard on one of your small plots.
  4. Once built, you will earn crates of salvage from completing follower missions.
  5.  Inside these crates you will find upgrade tokens which are used to improve your follower’s item levels.
  6.  The salvage yard is unlocked at level 96, after completing the questline that begins at Pinchwhistle Gearworks in The Spires of Arak.-
  •  Medium buildings unlock a varied set of abilities, quest and garrison opportunities.
  1.  Which building you want to build will depend on your playstyle and your priorities for what you want to accomplish in the expansion.
  2. – A good early choice is the Lumber Mill as it will unlock the timber resource, which can be gathered in abundance in Talador, Arak and Nagrand.
  3.  It works in the same way as the ore, herb and fish resource nodes.
  4. Timber is turned-in at the mill which is processed into garrison resources.-
  • Large buildings are similar to medium buildings, except they provide more substantial benefits.
  1. Of note is the level three Barracks which allow an extra 5 active followers, and the level three War Mill which gives you one Seals of Tempered Fate a week (bonus loot roll for raid boss).-

The following infograph provides information about the buildings and advice as to which ones you may want to build:

  • – Followers are found by completing quests, achievements, are hidden about the map, and purchased from vendors.-
  1. There is a maximum of 20 active followers (25 with a level 3 barracks) and if you go over your maximum, you are forced to deactivate followers in order to undertake further missions.
  2. Followers can be reactivated at a rate of once per day and at a cost of 250 gold.
  3. If your follower dies, they will respawn after an hour.-
  4. The level requirement of follower missions will vary along with the levels of your active followers.  If you have mostly level 100 followers, you will get mostly level 100 quests.-
  5. It is a good idea to keep your followers around the same level to ensure that new quests are generated at the appropriate level.
  6. You don’t want to have everyone at level 100 and have a single level 90, because you will find 2-4 level 90 quests being generated for a single follower.- Once your follower gets to level 100, it will continue to gain experience until it reaches epic quality.-
  7. At level 100, followers will start off with an ilvl of 600 and can increase it with upgrade tokens.
  8.  These tokens can be received from follower quest rewards, crates of salvage and War Mill work orders.
  • Ashran:Ashran is currently designated as this expansion’s main hub.

It is home to:Portals back to Azeroth,A bank and auctioneer,Faction quartermasters,Profession trainers,An archaeology vendor (which now include MOP crates of artefacts, and treasure maps),and a PVP orientated Timeless Isles style hub.

  •  Dailies:- There are no daily quest hubs.
  1.  You may go on an assault mission once a day for 800 or 1000 Apexis Crystals.
  2. – There is a garrison quest line where one part unlocks per week.  –
  3. Garrison invasions are a random event which gets triggered by killing around 500-1000 mobs in an area designated for Assault missions.
  4.  The requirements to trigger an invasion are deliberately vague, but it is likely that kills in a raid group do not count.-
  5. There is also a fishing daily but the reward is a pouch of random fishing items which do not contain anything new.
  • Apexis Crystal:Apexis Crystal essentially replaces Valor Points, and can use them to purchase three tiers of armour (630, 645, 655) along with some other goodies.

The vendor is located in Ashran.

  •  Primal Spirit Trader:-Primal Spirits work in the same way to the Spirit of Harmony in Pandaria.

The vendor is located in different parts of your garrison depending on its level.

At level one, the vendor is by the eastern wall of the great hall, next to a cart.

At level two, the vendor is to the north east, close to the northern gate.

At level three, the vendor is outside the Tower of War (which houses the portal to Ashran), outside of the eastern gate.

  • Treasures of Draenor:
  1. There are roughly 230 treasures scattered across the nooks and crannies of Draenor.
  2.  They work like treasure chests on Timeless Isles; they can only be looted once.
  3.  Once you have completed a zone’s main questline, you may purchase a treasure map from the archaeology vendor in Ashran for 100 gold.
  4. The vendor is situated outside and against the southern wall of the building which houses the archaeology trainer.
  • Faction Reputation:- Reputation is gained either from quest rewards, or killing level 100 mobs in areas where ‘Assault’ dailies occur.

Different areas give reputation to different factions.

The main exception is the Steamwheedle Preservation Society, where you collect items from ogres and rare mobs to the north of the river in Nagrand.-

There is an additional faction that is unlocked by building a level two trading post.-

Bodyguards from level three barracks also come with individual reputations (Similar to The Tillers/Anglers).

  • Legendary Quest:The legendary questline starts in Zangarra, Talador, where you will be upgrading an epic ring.

The first part is completed by killing and looting bosses in specific heroic dungeons, as well as a 5000 Apexis Crystal turn-in.

Part two will involve killing bosses and mobs in raids.

  • Rare Monster/Mob Spawns:Everyone who tags a rare mob will be able to loot it.
  1. Rare mobs have a 100% chance for loot, and may only be looted once.
  2.  The exception are certain rare mobs in Nagrand who drop items which are turned in for Steamwheedle reputation (they may be looted multiple times).
  3.  There are a number of rare mobs which drop mounts for everyone who tags it.
  4.  The exception is Nok-Karosh in Frostfire Ridge, who will only drop a single non-soulbound mount.
  5.  It is best to collect this mount in a group and hope you win a greed roll.
